To provide nutritionally balanced meals to homebound individuals who live alone or with another disabled person, and who, due to illness or disability, cannot prepare adequate meals, and to provide a daily check on the client.
Meals on Wheels of Evansville is a not-for-profit, primarily volunteer organization that provides hot, nutritious meals to the homebound. This is a noon meal delivered five days a week. The meals are prepared at the two local hospitals and delivered by a team of 80 volunteers. The meals are prepared under the direction of the dietary department and special diets can be accommodated. Each client fills out an application which is signed by his/her physician, giving MOW a diet order. There is usually no waiting period once the application is received. Eligibility requirements for the program are as follows:
In 2022, 298 clients were served. Meals on Wheels delivered 34,912 meals. Meals on Wheels is under the direction of a board of directors composed of various community leaders who are concerned with the needs of the homebound. The members total 17. There are three paid part-time staff members: an Executive Director, Program Coordinator, and Volunteer Coordinator.
