About us

Neighbors feeding neighbors since 1965.

Meals on Wheels of Evansville, Inc. is an independent, volunteer-driven nonprofit. We started with four meals on day one. Today six routes deliver 120–150 hot meals every weekday.

How we've grown
120–150 meals a day
Illustrated map, not to scale: delivery routes fan out from the hospital kitchens. In 1965, four meals were delivered on the first day; today six routes deliver 120 to 150 meals a day.
Today: six routes. About 50 volunteers, in teams of two, pick up hot meals at the hospitals and deliver them over the noon hour, five days a week. Illustration, not to scale: one lit house per meal (132 shown). Real routes and client addresses stay private. Figures: our story.

Our mission

To provide good nutrition, and a daily friendly contact, to older adults, people who are ill, and people living with physical or mental disabilities.

Our vision

No one in Evansville goes without good nutrition, and every client can live independently at home for as long as possible.

Our story

  1. 1965A First Presbyterian Church outreach survey finds Evansville needs home-delivered meals. Red Cross vehicles and Trinity United Methodist volunteers deliver four meals on the first day.
  2. 1967The Vanderburgh County Medical Auxiliary (today's Vanderburgh Medical Alliance) joins with volunteers and funding.
  3. 2014Community votes win us a Toyota Sienna through Toyota's 100 Cars for Good. We pass our older van on to Aurora, a local nonprofit working to end homelessness.
  4. TodaySix routes, about 50 volunteers, and 120–150 hot meals every weekday, for clients of any age.
