Volunteer

Deliver lunch. Check in. Be the best part of someone's day.

Volunteers are the heart of Meals on Wheels of Evansville. About 50 of them, working in pairs, get 120–150 hot meals to Evansville doors every weekday. We'd love for you to join them.

Find your role

Driver

Pick up hot boxes at the hospital kitchen and drive the route in our Meals on Wheels vehicle. No wear on your car, no gas to buy.

Runner

Ride along and carry meals to the door. This is the friendly face and the daily check-in.

Substitute

Busy schedule? Get a call when a regular needs coverage, and say yes when you can.

Teams & groups

Companies, congregations, clubs and classes can adopt a route one day a week or a month.

A delivery day

  1. Late morning: meet your partner at Deaconess or Ascension St. Vincent around 10:30 a.m. and load the insulated hot boxes.
  2. Over the noon hour: deliver to about two dozen clients on your route.
  3. At every door: a hello and a quick look. If no one answers, call the office and we take it from there.
  4. About two hours later: drop off the hot boxes. You're done for the day.

What you'll need

  • A valid driver's license and a good driving record for the past 8 years (drivers only)
  • A background, reference and driving-record check, which we set up after you sign up
  • A signed client confidentiality agreement
  • One personal reference
  • A friendly hello. No experience needed.

Raise your hand

Start with the basics here. Serenity Ricketts, our Volunteer Coordinator, will follow up about the background check and your first-day training.

Volunteer questions

Do I have to use my own car?

No. Drivers use a marked Meals on Wheels vehicle, so there's no wear on your car and no gas to pay for. Runners ride along and don't drive at all.

How much time does it take?

About two hours, late morning through the lunch hour. You can go every week, once or twice a month, or be an on-call substitute.

Do I need experience?

No, just a friendly hello. On your first day, our Volunteer Coordinator trains you.

What checks are required?

A background check, a reference check and, for drivers, a driving-record check covering the past 8 years. We set these up after you sign up. You'll also sign a client confidentiality agreement.

Can my company, church or class volunteer together?

Yes. Groups can adopt a route one day a week or one day a month. Check "I'm signing up a group" in the form above and we'll help you plan it.

What if a client doesn't answer the door?

You call our office and staff take it from there, reaching the client and their emergency contacts. You're never left to handle it alone.

Know someone who'd be good at this?

Routes run in pairs, so the easiest way to start is with someone you already like spending two hours with.
